The Rudolf Kempe Society

IN SUPPORT OF YOUNG MUSICIANS

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The Rudolf Kempe Society, founded in London in 1980, and its German Branch, launched in Munich in 1982, are both registered charities which, through a variety of activities in England and Germany, work independently as well as through an exchange scheme towards the same goal in professional education: to bridge the gap between the means of training generally offered by established institutions and the ever-increasing demands made on young musicians entering the profession. Through the same scheme, today’s audiences of concert goers and music lovers – usually excluded from the working process and thus condemned to the passive attitude of consumers – are invited to participate in the Society’s educational activities and to gain insight into the creative process of interpretation. In this way, the Society’s work is recognised as opening up new dimensions of communication and understanding.

Songs of Apollo

Word and Music Programmes devised by Cordula Kempe

This exciting project explores the relationship of literary and musical text, its meaning in study and performance – for technical execution as well as interpretation – and its value as a guideline in today’s world of performing arts.

It is aimed at developing a greater awareness of responsibility for the authenticity of text in its rendition, in music, literature and drama; it addresses academics, performers and audiences alike.

Musicians, especially instrumentalists who spend most of their time and energy exercising their fingers on strings or keyboards, come to realise that by applying their intellect and imagination in the kindred field of the spoken word, they can enhance their musical performance by a more conscious use of the articulation and phrasing; this results in a clearer sense of understanding of what they has often only conceived on the affective level. Actors, in turn, even if they do not think of themselves as musical, often find that if they are willing to entrust themselves to music as a catalyst, their range of expression and capability of verse speaking can be enhanced. At the other end of the spectrum, audiences come to realise how the two complementary art forms, by inspiring each other, heighten the overall experience.

Our programmes incorporate vocal and instrumental music of all periods, interwoven with poetry and prose from classical antiquity to Shakespeare’s time and the present. Performed by young musicians alongside leading artists of the musical and acting professions, they are both informative and highly entertaining.
