Old Times (Radio)
Stage and
Television Today, 9th April 1998
Harold Pinter’s laconic and brittle language has
its own distinctive poetry. Its beat was caught by Ned Chaillet, director of
‘Old Times’ (R4, Monday March 16th), and the well-modulated cast of
three. Julia Ormond and Michael Pennington were the elliptical husband and wife
whose hostilities took on a new vigour with the appearance of an old friend
(Cheryl Campbell).
This production emphasised Pinter’s use of language
as a weapon in the guerrilla warfare of life. The participants did not converse
so much as make pronouncements which underlined their solitariness.
